Nancy K - buttoned fingerless mittens with cable pattern

This pattern is named after, and dedicated in memory of, one of my dearest knitting students who passed away in early January 2007.  I have been so fortunate to build the relationships I have as a knitting instructor and yarn store owner. I am often amazed that the act of knitting can touch so many lives in profound ways.  My memories of Nancy will always be of joyful hours around the knitting circle.

A portion from each sale of this pattern will be donated to breast cancer research.

SIZE
M [L] each can be knit in short or medium lengths (shown in the periwinkle size medium, medium length with optional picot bind off)

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
size medium, medium length - 7 inches wide x 8.5 inches high, unbuttoned and unstretched
size large, short length - 8.5 inches wide x 6.5 inches high, unbuttoned and unstretched

MATERIALS
Cascade Pima Tencel (to be held double throughout) [50% Pima Cotton, 50% Tencel; 109yds/ 50gr]; color: #1693; 2 [3] skeins  or for cool weather mittens:  Misti Alpaca Chunky [100% baby alpaca, 109 yds/100gr]; not shown; 1 skein 

1 set US #8 needles (straight or circular)
1 set US  #8 needles appropriate for working in the round, either double pointed needles, two circulars or one long circular for the magic loop method (pattern is written for double pointed needles) 
2 stitch markers
Cable needle or spare double pointed needle
Tapestry needle
Smooth waste yarn
8-10 buttons between three-eighths inch and five-eights inch in circumference (3-quarters inch buttons shown)
