Herringbone Stitch Tutorial

Cast on specified number of stitches. (Please note: the herringbone stitch is quite tight. Go up several sizes in needles and try to keep your stitches loose.)

Knit Side:
Row 1: *Knit 2 tog in back of the stitch. Only slip first stitch off needle* repeat to the last stitch. Knit in the back of the last stitch.


Begin a knit 2 together through the back loops of the stitches. Pull the yarn through the two stitches on left needle, but leave those stitches on the needle.



Now, slip the only the first stitch of these two on the left needle off the needle.



Next, begin a knit 2 together through the back loops of the stitches. You will be knitting the stitch that was previously knit together and remained on the left needle together with the next stitch on the left needle.



Repeat the process of slipping only the first stitch off the needle and knitting 2 together through the back loops of the stitch until only one stitch remains. Knit that last stitch through the back loops.

Your stitch count should remain the same.

Purl side:
Row 2: *Purl 2 tog, only slip first stitch off needle* repeat to the last stitch. Purl the last stitch.



Begin a purl 2 together. Pull the yarn through the two stitches on left needle, but leave those stitches on the needle.



Now, slip the only the first stitch of these two on the left needle off the needle.



Next, begin a purl 2 together. You will be purling the stitch that was previously purled together and remained on the left needle together with the next stitch on the left needle.



Repeat the process of slipping only the first stitch off the needle and purling 2 together until only one stitch remains. Purl that last stitch.

Your stitch count should remain the same.
